Rock Mulch vs. Wood Mulch: Which is the right choice for you?

wood mulch rock mulchWith so much information floating around on the internet and the opinions of others, landscaping books and even home improvement TV shows, making the choice of the best mulch for you can be a difficult one.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when making your mulch choices:

Wood (bark) Mulch

  • For shrub, annuals and perennial planting, usually wood (bark) mulch works best for these plants to thrive.
  • Wood (bark) mulch is usually made from the bark of hardwood trees (usually hickory trees or oak trees). It is usually shredded finely and when it is first spread, it has an earthy scent.
  • Bark mulch can also be made from cedar or pine
  • Usually dark brown in color, bark mulch can be dyed black or red to complement your landscape
  • The pros of bark mulch are: it’s cheapest to install, decomposes and adds organic matter to your soil, requires less frequent watering as it holds in moisture, eliminates the need for weed barriers or edging, and it contrasts well with surrounding shrubs and landscape
  • The cons of bark mulch include: requiring replacement every 1 or 2 years, colors fade when the mulch is exposed to direct sunlight, and it attracts insects.

Rock Mulch

  • Rock mulch is usually a decorative groundcover made from gravel
  • Rock mulch gravel pieces range in size from fist size to pea size
  • Available in a wide variety of colors
  • Rock mulch usually comes from the mining of the bottom of riverbeds
  • The pros of rock mulch include: not needing to replace it every couple of years, availability in a very large variety of sizes, colors and shapes, makes leaf blowing much easier than wood mulch,
  • The cons include: it is necessary to constantly be sure that the area is free of debris from leaves or plants so don’t grow between the weed barrier and the gravel; difficulty in adding or replacing plants once weed barrier and gravel are installed; you must choose plants that can withstand the heat the the gravel and rock absorb in hotter months.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Mansfield Landscaping

Steve did a fantastic job. I enjoyed the relationship with Steve. I spent two or three hours at his nursery talking to him.

My home is for sale and Steve has certainly improved it's curb appeal both front and back. He's very innovative. His suggestions have worked wonders!

Steve from Mansfield Landscaping did a great job in helping us design our landscaping. Ron and John did an excellent job in seeing that the design was carried out and the final result was way beyond our expectations. They should be very proud of the work that they have completed for us. The entire crew was very hard working, friendly, dependable and polite. They did a great job with the clean up after the project was completed and the job was completed exactly when Steve said it would be done. Excellent and well run company.

I recently had my villa landscaping done by Steve Mansfield and his crew. They worked hard for 3 days and did an excellent job. I am very happy with the job and everyone who has seen it has told me it looks great. I was quoted 20-30 plants but was given many more to make my property look great at no charge. I was so surprised when Steve called to tell me he was having my driveway, walkway and patio power washed so that the dirt from their work would be cleaned up. True to his word, he sent someone over to do the work and not only does my property look great, but he also cleaned the street where there was dirt from the rock piles. I would recommend him to anyone looking to have their landscape done immediately and done well.

We have just completed a large landscaping job with Steve Mansfield and are totally pleased and impressed with the quality of the work, the overall appearance and the end product. The job was completed within a week of the estimate and far below other estimates. With those estimates the jobs could not have been started for over a month, at a much higher cost. We went to the nursery with our outside pictures and chose the specific trees we wanted in our yard. This was a long process, but well worth the effort. Steve likes to talk, but he estimated the job that we wanted with the exact trees we wanted to our total satisfaction.

We are very pleased with the results in both our yard and lanai. Steve warned us some plants were not hardy and when the frosts got them, he replaced a lot of them without being asked, and with no charge. We thoroughly recommend Mansfield Landscaping.

Kit Hughes (The Villages, Hadley)

I have always had a positive experience with Mansfield Landscaping. We shopped many potential landscapers and none of them had the industry knowledge and level of customer service I received from Manfield. Additionally, we have continued to have great service by this crew AFTER we paid them, and to me, that is the true test of a good company.

We just moved into our Village’s home last fall and had many expenses with new furnishings, but we really wanted to have at least a couple of palms now and did not want to wait another year until we could afford to redo our landscaping. After checking with a couple of other nurseries we were very surprised at how much lower the prices were at Mansfield Landscaping. The owner, Steve was very knowledgeable about where trees should or should not be planted. We were given as much time as needed to pick out and tag the exact trees we wanted on our own, but if we had any questions he was just around the corner to answer them. The trees are beautiful and of good quality. We look forward to working with them in the future to give our yard that professional look that we see so many of our neighbors have after using Mansfield Landscaping.
