Backyard Putting Greens: Practice right outside your door!

backyard putting green downWhen you think about inviting friends and family over for a get together, visit, cookout or family fun day, you may think of family activities to participate in indoors, like board games, charades, or a pool table. Outside, you might think about volleyball, badminton or playing catch, but there’s not many activities as fun as having your own backyard putting green.

When you hire a professional landscaping company to create and install your backyard putting green there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. Here are some do’s and don’ts that your landscaper should know:

  1. Do have your landscaper place it near the house - when you feel like getting outside and putting around on your personal green, you’re more likely to use it if it’s closer to your house. That’s probably also where your grill, patio or any other social areas you use outside will be, so include it in the area outdoors where you spend the most time.
  2. Don’t place it too close to where you park the cars and keep it away from the windows of the house.
For obvious reasons, golf balls and glass don’t mix well. While you may plan on putting and making it a rule for your green to be used for putting only, chip shots are inevitable even if they’re not intentional, and you’re not going to have much fun if you’re worried about breaking windows on the house or surrounding cars.
  3. Do make it a fun challenge and make it your own
A one-hole putting green can lose it’s appeal and get boring fast. You’ll want to be original in your design so you and your friends and family can use it for years. Add some curves and undulation, a sand pit and some mounds to keep it fun and challenging. You can even personalize it further with your own monogrammed flags, a name for your “course” and personalized signs.
  4. Don’t use live grass or living turf
With a backyard putting green, it's best to create it with artificial turf. Your sand pits, mounds and any interesting shapes you choose to include are difficult to water and effectively mow if you are using live turf grass. Artificial turf is also created with the best synthetic material that makes a perfect surface for putting and is nearly completely maintenance free. It survives any element (cold or hot temperatures, rain, sleet, ice or snow) and when cared for properly, they’re always ready for play!
  5. Choose the right landscape design team
Choosing the right company to assist you in your goals for a perfect backyard putting green is the most important step in the process. The right company will help you figure out the perfect location in your yard, add creative elements and advise you regarding the right materials for the job. What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Mansfield Landscaping

We are very pleased with the results in both our yard and lanai. Steve warned us some plants were not hardy and when the frosts got them, he replaced a lot of them without being asked, and with no charge. We thoroughly recommend Mansfield Landscaping.

Kit Hughes (The Villages, Hadley)

I wanted to take a minute to personally thank you for the great job you and your staff did on my back yard at my house. Everything turned out so beautiful. Every time I call you, I receive great, on time service at a fair price. You cannot ask for anything more than that.

Thanks again for having your staff stop by and put out the colorful annuals, just in time for Stephanies wedding. It really added that finishing touch to my already beautiful yard. Thanks for everything.

Mark Sullivan (Orlando)

We are delighted with the beautiful landscaping work at our home. The workers were enjoyable to have at our home and the result is even better than we had hoped for. Now we see a gorgeous palm tree and other plantings. It is wonderful to walk in the front door and have our new view. It is a lovely walk through a garden. We couldn’t be happier.

Lee and Judy Jacobs

We would like to thank you and the crew of Mansfield Landscaping for the fine work done at our home. As with the previous work you have done for us, we were extremely pleased. It is unfortunate that it is so difficult to find people these days who take pride and ownership in their work and can be relied upon to do a job well. The Mansfield Landscaping crew was professional, dependable and timely. The hard work you and your crew gave to the project is commendable. The trees, plants and design you suggested have added beauty to our home.

If you ever need recommendations, feel free to use us as a reference.

Steve and Brandee Sullivan (Orlando)

We have just completed a large landscaping job with Steve Mansfield and are totally pleased and impressed with the quality of the work, the overall appearance and the end product. The job was completed within a week of the estimate and far below other estimates. With those estimates the jobs could not have been started for over a month, at a much higher cost. We went to the nursery with our outside pictures and chose the specific trees we wanted in our yard. This was a long process, but well worth the effort. Steve likes to talk, but he estimated the job that we wanted with the exact trees we wanted to our total satisfaction.

Used Manfield and I am satisfied. Called him on Monday and he came the same day and gave an estimate and the work was completed on Thursday. I like that.

We used Mansfield Landscaping as well. They did an excellent job and we were very impressed with their nursery and the workmanship. We had walls build and landscaping. Our palms look as nice as the day they were planted and so far we have not had any problem with any of the shrubs. Steve has stopped by several times just to make sure everything is okay with landscaping. I would definitely recommend Mansfield. This spring we need to tackle the lawn as that is a mess. Can anyone recommend a good landscaper for installation of sod? Looking for someone that does a lot of sod installation.
