Resodding replaces an existing lawn with new sod. Before replacing grass, find out why it declined and whether the site will support the replacement. New turf cannot, by itself, correct persistent shade, drainage or irrigation problems.
Does Your Lawn Need Repair or Replacement?
Start with the pattern of damage: isolated bare spots, shaded areas, standing water or repeated decline in the same places. Ask a qualified turf professional or your local Extension office to help identify the cause before choosing a remedy. Keep photos and note changes in irrigation, foot traffic or surrounding trees.
What Should Happen Before New Sod Is Laid?
UF/IFAS guidance on turfgrass replacement recommends assessing the site, removing existing grass and weeds, evaluating soil and irrigation, and preparing a level surface with good soil contact. Do not lay new sod over the old lawn.
Discuss these items in the proposed scope:
- Which areas will be replaced, and which plants, beds and hardscape will remain?
- What caused the decline, and what needs to change before installation?
- How will removal, grading, irrigation coverage and access be handled?
- Which grass suits the property's sun, use and care requirements?
- Who will water and care for the sod during establishment?
When Should You Resod in Central Florida?
Choose a time when the site can be prepared and you can provide the required establishment care. Weather, sod availability, irrigation readiness and current watering restrictions all affect the plan. A list of preferred months is not enough to decide whether a particular property is ready.
New Sod and Established Grass Need Different Care
Get care instructions for the grass and site you are installing. Confirm watering, rooting checks and the first mowing with the installer; do not apply an established-lawn schedule to newly laid sod. Check your water management district and local utility for the rules that apply to your address, including any new-landscape provisions.
